WHISKY MARKET OVERVIEW
“Aside from COVID-19 updates, the big news in this first quarter is the change in tariffs on Scotch Whisky in the US. This was always going to be reviewed with the presidential change, but that is not to say that the hard work of the SWA and UK government was not needed or without impact.
How does this affect whisky investments? In reality, probably not very much. The tariffs had a huge impact on the export market with a drop in sales over the last 12 to 14 months to tune of £500 million, but this was largely restricted to the consumer market.
When it comes to investment-grade whisky bottles and casks I don’t think US tariffs had a significant repercussions. The East Asian market is where a lot of collectors and investors of Scotch seem to be rather than the US, and secondly, Irish whiskey has historically been a stronger seller in the US than Scotch.
Projections indicate that by 2030 that US consumers will be drinking more Irish whiskey than Scotch. So even if the US had continued to impose tariffs, the likely impact on your whisky investments would have been minimal.
In our annual report released in January we spoke about how New World whiskies are disrupting the global whiskey scene thanks to ever-increasing quality and growing visibility in key markets.
In February 2021 this trend intensified with Mackmyra in Sweden named winner of the Sustainable Distillery category and Best Distiller for the Rest of World category for Angela D’Orazio at the prestigious Icons of Whisky awards.
Mackmyra have been on my radar for a while now, and it was only a matter of time before they received international recognition like this. The future looks very bright for collectors of Mackmyra. If you are looking to add a Mackmyra to your portfolio, then I suggest Moment 22 and their Intelligens AI 01 Single Malt as good starting points.”
